A friend of ours has a collection of old plates that have been hanging on display in her kitchen for many years. Around the rim of one are flags of many countries. The complete list of the countries is: France, Great Britain, Ireland, Rumania, Brasil, Serbia, Scotland, Greece, Portugal, Cuba, Italy, Russia, Japan, Panama, Belgium …and at the top, the U.S., whose flag is referred to as “Old Glory.” What is the reason for this unusual collection of countries? (we’re not sure if Scotland is really a country!)

Note from the ‘Hood: De Sales Night
Saturday, February 13 from 8pm-midnight will feature a great live band (Second Vision), open bar, dancing, PLUS great food from The Gold Standard Café! All this for only $40 per person, complete price. At the beautiful St. Francis de Sales School Auditorium at 47th and Springfield Ave. This year the theme is “Baseball” and you will enjoy how this theme will be worked into the murals, the table decorations and the food from The Gold Standard! This is one of the largest neighborhood events of the year, and particularly enjoyable because so many of us don’t get out much during the cold winter months.
Meet Chef Riley Boston
We welcome Riley (back) to our kitchen!
Riley(above, right) grew up in the neighborhood, and he cooked Sunday Brunch at Abbraccio while he was still a student at West Catholic High School. He studied at the CIA (Culinary Institute of America) to hone his skills; then worked for one year at LaCroix on Rittenhouse Square.
Riley’s now in charge of Dinner at The Gold Standard (plus he provides many suggestions for Brunch) and he works closely with our long-time Executive Chef Joey Balaaldia.
